Spent an evening hanging out at Fort Phoenix late last August. My home, New Bedford, Massachusetts, gained worldwide reputation in the 1800s as the greatest whaling port and the richest city per capita in the world. The whaling industry in the United States has all but disappeared, but today New Bedford is still the largest fishing port in the USA (in terms of revenue) and also boasts the longest hurricane barrier on the east coast at 3.5 miles.
